SEL & PBIS at Wilson

Supporting the Whole Child Through Positive Behavior and Emotional Growth

At Wilson Elementary, we know that a student’s success goes beyond academics. That’s why we are deeply committed to developing the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. Our approach combines Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where all students can thrive.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Wilson Elementary is a proud four-time PBIS Platinum Award-winning school, recognized for our consistent implementation of a school-wide behavior system that promotes a positive school climate, reduces disruptions, and strengthens academic outcomes.

PBIS at Wilson is built around clear expectations that are taught, modeled, and reinforced throughout the school. These expectations are grounded in our ROARS values:

  • R – Respect

  • O – Optimism

  • A – Achievement

  • R – Responsibility

  • S – Safety

Students learn these values through direct instruction, class discussions, and real-world practice. Staff members reinforce positive behavior with verbal praise, classroom recognition, and school-wide incentives that celebrate students for making good choices and contributing to a positive school community.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

We believe that teaching students how to manage their emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions is just as important as academic learning. SEL is embedded into our daily routines, classroom lessons, and school culture, including through our Wellness Wednesdays.

Through SEL, students learn to:

  • Recognize and manage their emotions

  • Show empathy and respect for others

  • Develop positive relationships with peers and adults

  • Set and achieve personal and academic goals

  • Handle challenges with confidence and resilience

Our teachers build strong, caring relationships with students and model respectful communication and collaboration. This supportive environment allows students to feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving their best.

Whole Child Development

At Wilson, we believe in nurturing every aspect of a child’s growth. Our SEL and PBIS efforts are part of a larger commitment to whole child development, which includes:

  • Fostering intellectual curiosity and academic strengths

  • Encouraging leadership and teamwork

  • Instilling ethical values and a strong sense of community

  • Promoting personal responsibility and a growth mindset

When students feel safe, supported, and emotionally grounded, they are better prepared to learn and succeed. At Wilson Elementary, PBIS and SEL work hand-in-hand to help every Wildcat ROAR with confidence, compassion, and purpose.
